Celtics logoWell how about that?! The Boston Celtics (for you non-Americans it's pronounced sell-ticks, not kell-ticks) are going to the NBA Finals for the first time in 21 years!!

And ... and they're playing against Los Angeles!

When I was in California (1998-2004) I was a Los Angeles Lakers fan - I'll admit it. But how could you not be - they had the three-peat in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

But not anymore. Especially not against Boston.

I'm sure we'll see this a few times in the media in the next few days, but right now Laker coach Phil Jackson has won nine NBA Championships - tied with Celtics legend Red Auerbach.

You really think that Boston can let Jackson get ten and pass Red?

Maybe there is a reason its pronounced that way? Probably not, seeing as the teams was formed way before the Moneyball era.

Yeah, and instead of a "C" they'd probably have a "$".

And a sponsor.

"Tonight the Los Angeles Lakers square off against the TD Banknorth/Commerce Bank Boston $eltics ..."

Why Commerce Bank?
How about the Los Angeles Angels of Anehiem presented by the Disneyland resort year of A Million Dreams (Part 2)
I think that Celtic F.C. is also pronounced that way.

While I just went to brush my teeth, I though about that. I realized that the current Garden was originally going to be the Shammut Center, but they merged with FleetBank before the center opened (causing all of the signs on the seats to be changed). Ironically both companies were bidding for the rights at the same time while the celling was being completed in secret. Then it was going to be Bank of America after Fleet was sold to them. I don't think Commerce came in there anywhere.

Japanese baseball actually have team names like that. It goes sponsor and nickname. Cities are not usually included. I can't think of a good example right now, however.

Hope you're not too fond of the name "TD Banknorth Garden" ...

TD Banknorth has merged with Commerce Bank and are changing their name in 2009 to "TD Commerce Bank" (see TD Commerce Bank Garden).
